Beach with waves and strong currents
Caleta de Famara
Without a doubt, it is the most spectacular beach in the municipality of Teguise. The beach begins in the small village of La Caleta de Famara and stretches for several kilometers to the foothills of the impressive cliff of the same name. The sand is clean and fine, with a golden-brown color. The prevailing trade winds have formed large dunes with sparse vegetation at the back of the beach, where bathers relax peacefully under the sun.
It is a beach where there are usually waves and wind, and although it is a very popular beach, its vast extension means it never feels crowded, making you feel alone in a dreamlike setting. Famara is ideal for learning and practicing water sports such as surfing, bodyboarding, kitesurfing, or windfoiling. It is also common to see hang gliders and paragliders launching from the top of the Famara cliff to fly over this incredible beach. We can say there are two Famaras: one at low tide and one at high tide — both equally spectacular.
At low tide, or vacía as we say on the island, the sand gains ground from the sea, and large, shallow, calm pools form along the shore. That’s when the vast stretch of wet sand is lit by the sun and reflects the cliff walls, creating a huge, beautiful, and unique natural mirror. On the other hand, when the tide comes in, there are areas of the beach where the sand disappears under the sea, and the waves reach the callaos — rounded volcanic rocks smoothed by marine erosion.
It is important to exercise extreme caution when swimming, as this is a beach with strong waves and powerful ocean currents.
