La Mareta
Old Water Storage for Human and Livestock Consumption

La Mareta, Teguise
The Mareta de la Villa has its origins in the aboriginal period. It was a structure used to store water from the scarce rains, aiming to guarantee its availability and the survival of the town. Each year, the Cabildo decided whether the water was for the residents' use or for the animals, and also appointed a guard or maretero to oversee its proper use.
Over the years, the boundaries of the Mareta were expanded and improved. It was not the only one, but it was the most valued for its location and size in Teguise, the main settlement of the island during the Old Regime.
Since the establishment of the public water supply network in the second half of the 20th century, the Mareta fell into disuse and was later sold, leading to the destruction of its infrastructure.
Today, only its toponym remains, despite being declared a Historic Complex in 1976, when it no longer existed.
