Muñique
The Charm of Lanzarote's Countryside
Muñique is an even smaller village than those around it, but with the same magic and tranquility. The few buildings face Soo and the Risco de Famara, and its small church stands in the middle of the village, right by the road. Due to the scarce rainfall, the Lanzarote farmer works the land by covering it with a 10 cm layer of picón or rofe, which helps retain moisture from the air and the morning dew, preventing it from evaporating under the heat of the sun. This area also grows crops in what is known as jable, which is sand displaced by the winds and has similar properties to rofe. In Muñique and Soo, we can see dunes and crops grown in both jable and rofe, including traditional products such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, watermelons, melons, lentils, and more. Overlooking this landscape is the mountain of El Cuchillo, considered the oldest crater in Lanzarote.
