La Graciosa
The Hidden Jewel of the Atlantic
The municipality of Teguise encompasses the islands and islets in the north of the island: the Chinijo Archipelago. This archipelago includes the islands of La Graciosa, Montaña Clara, Alegranza, and the islets of Roque del Este and Roque del Oeste (or Hell's).
This archipelago and its waters have been part of the Islotes del Norte de Lanzarote and Riscos de Famara Natural Park since 1986. Its waters also belong to one of only two marine fishing reserves in the Canary Islands and the largest in the entire European Union.
The Los Islotes Integral Nature Reserve has high scientific value, home to numerous threatened and protected species. For birds, it is a very important nesting, breeding, and refuge area, with a high concentration of marine and terrestrial species, both native and migratory. Among the most characteristic birds, we must mention the Cory's shearwater, a seabird with fine plumage and elegant flight that feeds exclusively on live fish. It is currently protected, and Alegranza is home to the second largest breeding colony in the world.
La Graciosa is the largest of these islets, with an area of 27 km² and a maximum altitude of 266 meters. It is the only one open to visitors. Currently, about 600 people are registered here, many of whom are dedicated to fishing. Here, there is no asphalt, no stress, no rush. The streets are white sand, and everything is peaceful, natural, and welcoming. To reach La Graciosa, there is a regular service of small ferries that depart from the port of Órzola several times a day.
